Today’s guest poster is Sara from The Hiding Spot. She is certainly one of those bloggers/friends whom keeps me going. Today she talks about how books help get her through stressful times!

It took me awhile to figure out what to write about for my guest post. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know Drea through Twitter the past few months – I feel like we are friends and we’ve never even met face-to-face (this must be remedied sometime)! In the end, I decided to write about how ridiculously stressful life can get and how helpful books are to me, and many other readers and bloggers out there, during this time of year!
December is crazy a crazy month for me. I really don’t think that there is any other month that is quite as packed with stuff to do as December. There’s holiday celebrations, finals, my birthday, horrid weather (ugh, Michigan)… put all that together and my head feels like it is going to explode! There is only one way for me to escape this time of year: BOOKS!
Books have always been my sanctuary from reality, no matter the time of year. But I like to take the time in December to reread some of my favorite books. After all, if I’m going to spend time reading, even though I barely have time to spare, I might as well make sure it’s a book I know I’ll love!
I think it’s important to read a book that makes me laugh when I’m stressed. Bonus if it’s a book with some romance! For books like that, I find myself turning to Maureen Johnson’s KEYS TO THE GOLDEN FIREBIRD and Sarah Dessen’s THE TRUTH ABOUT FOREVER. Both novels never fail to make me laugh, and don’t even get me started on the love stories. To me, a good love story is like a much deserved bubble bath.
Next, choose a book that makes you appreciate life, like Jenny Downham’s BEFORE I DIE or Gayle Forman’s IF I STAY. I don’t usually cry when I read, but both of these books had me in tears. I think it is of utmost of importance to read a book once in awhile that makes you want to go out and experience life and live it the fullest when you after you finish the last sentence. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a book about death, but it does have to make you realize how lucky you really are.
Lastly, pick up that book that feels like your favorite pair of jeans. For me that book is Melina Marchetta’s JELLICOE ROAD. I was enthralled with this novel from start to finish, I sobbed uncontrollably when I finished it, and I wanted to reread immediately. Every once in awhile there is a book that leaves you speechless, Jellicoe Road was that book for me.
What books do you pick up when you’re stressed and life gets you down?
Thanks for having me, Drea, and congrats!

Thanks Sara! I look forward to hearing what everyone else chooses as well.
